Description

the covers of Wendingen, often original lithographs and woodcuts, were a.o. designed by Roland Holst, Lion Cachet, Toorop, Jessurun de Mesquita, Krop and De Klerk. The covers of volume IV, nr 11, were designed by El Lissitzky and those of the seven Frank Lloyd Wright editions by Wijdeveld himself

Literature

A.W. Purvis, Dutch graphic design 1918-1945, New York 1992, figs 3-3/6, p. 49-53: "Wijdeveld used solid, heavy borders, always constructed from right angles. His elaborate compositions were built solely out of typographic elements. Wijdevelds designs have an austere character and an ingrained rigidity. The title pages of Wendingen, especially in the initial issues, are typographic reflections of the brick architecture of the Amsterdam School".

Martijn F. le Coultre, Wendingen 1918-1932, Architectuur en vormgeving, Blaricum 2001

Catalogue Note

Wendingen was founded by architect Hendricus Theodorus Wijdeveld (1885-1987), the designer of its extraordinary typography. The periodical presents a fascinating overview of art, architecture and design of the beginning of the 20th century in The Netherlands as well as abroad. At the time, the magazine served as an important source of inspiration to many Dutch artists (see note to lot 298), and is regarded nowadays as a priceless contemporary document.

Volume 11, december 1918, on Toorop here offered is signed by the artist in pencil, with two stamps of 1923 designed by Toorop and a number of newspaper cuttings on the artist pasted in the advertisement pages.
