Catalogue Note
Hildebrand Lucien (Hildo) Krop (1884 - 1970) was already a renowned sculptor in Amsterdam when he started designing models for the Eerste Steenwijker Kunstaardewerk Fabriek (ESKAF), co-founded by his father Hein Krop in 1919. Hildo's designs for sculptural vessels and figures echo his monumental works in their parabolic shapes combined with animal and fantasy figures, which were to become trademarks of the Amsterdam School style. The artistic pottery designed by Krop and other artists for ESKAF were presented under the trade name 'Scarabea'. A selection of ESKAF works by Krop, including the model here offered for sale, was awarded a gold medal at the 1925 Paris World Fair
