Catalogue Note

Decorative painter and designer Jacobus Wilhelmus ('Jaap') Gidding (1887 - 1955) is renowned for his cinema interiors, of which he designed about a dozen, the Tuschinsky Theatre in Amsterdam (1920-1921) being the most impressive. Gidding painted the  walls and ceiling with dazzling, expressive whimsical motifs in bright colours and designed a matching floor-filling carpet which gave the Amsterdam School style its nickname 'Tuschinsky style'. Gidding's patterns for ceramics and carpets show similarities to the work of Colenbrander
