Catalogue Note
A follow-up to the previous year's La muraille parlante which had provided a light-hearted background to the military training of the young. The present volume addresses more innovative training methods. The St Petersburg Cadet Corps had opened in 1731 with 200 youthful recruits. Its capacity had trebled by the time Anhalt took over control in 1786. Although his time in charge was relatively brief, spanning only eight years, it was regarded as a particularly enlightened and humane period of an otherwise quite brutish institution.
