Description

  • Autograph manuscript of his notes on J. G. Sulzer's 'Essai sur le bonheur des êtres intelligens'
a working manuscript, written in German in Mendelssohn's fine, elegant script, comprising his reflections on thirteen passages from Sulzer's essay, each marked with a page reference and mostly preceded by a French incipit ("S[eite] 3. Le bonheur - d'accord [this section deleted]...S.4. La premiere - de la nature...S.10-11 Pour etre - intelligences...S.11 am Ende. agreable]...S.12 Les plaisirs - influer [this section deleted]...S.15. Vous etes - dans la lune?...S.16. Cette derniere - supposition...S.18 Supposons - autres...S.19...S.20. Dans le - plaisir...S.21 gantz oben...S.28.29.30...S.34. Si ce monde - du monde entier..."), written throughout in brown ink, containing a number of autograph cancellations, with some revisions entered in the margins; in a prefatory remark to the reader (possibly Sulzer himself?) Mendelssohn states that it is very likely that he has failed to penetrate the Professor's very abstract concepts; in the review he criticizes, amongst other points, Sulzer's tendency to find rational elements also in sensual pleasures, questions the appropriateness, even the intelligibility, of some passages, and notes, regarding happiness, that the likelihood that everyone will be happy decreases with the number of people, while at the same time the probability that some of them will be happy increases

Catalogue Note

a remarkable manuscript, possibly intended for sulzer himself, displaying to the full mendelssohn's powers of analysis and reasoning.

The work considered here is the 'Essai sur le bonheur des êtres intelligens' by the Swiss aesthetician Johann Georg Sulzer (1720-1779), published in 1756 in the Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres. Année MDCCLIV. There are, however, some remarkable differences between the content of Sulzer's published text and the content of Sulzer's essay as discussed by Mendelssohn. For, the material in no fewer than five sections of Mendelssohn's notes - namely, those indicated as being on pages 15, 16, 19, 20 and 21 (of, presumably, Mendelssohn's pre-publication Sulzer source) - simply does not exist in the printed essay. This strongly suggests that the manuscript, or perhaps a copy of it, may have been sent to Sulzer, who thereupon revised his work accordingly.
