Catalogue Note

This was Saur's first major publication and the first book printed in German Gothic type in America. It is an extensive collection of hymns intended for the Ephrata brethren. As the book was used extensively and over a long period, it is now quite rare complete and in good condition. Christoph Sauer had arrived in Pennsylvania in 1724 and went on to produce the first Bible of the New World 1743.
