8vo (182 x 110mm.), printed on vellum, 87 leaves (of 88) plus 9 leaves of manuscript, metalcut illustrations (some full-page), almost all with contemporary illumination, illuminated initials, later sixteenth-century brown calf with azured centre- and cornerpieces on a ground of quatrefoils, lettered in gilt iesus and maria in centrepieces on both covers, with the owner's name marie desgroliers at head and foot of upper cover, and the date anno mdlxxvii on the lower cover, spine gilt in compartments, two pairs of green silk ties, front flyleaf with verses in a sixteenth-century hand entitled "Le livre au lecteur", lacking L2, some illuminated areas slightly smudged, upper joint cracked, lower joint rubbed

French and Italian Collectors and their Bindings (1953), 22, a slightly more elaborate Parisian binding of c. 1569 on a Book of Hours, also executed for a lady. More usually the name of the owner would appear in the centre of the cartouches.

Catalogue Note

An attractive copy with a female near-contemporary provenance. The nine additional manuscript leaves contain painted miniatures with text, dating from the mid-sixteenth century.
