Catalogue Note
a tall copy of the editio princeps. The work originally consisted of thirteen books, but only books I-VI survive; Xylander's Latin translation had been published previously in 1575. Claude Gaspar Bachet, sieur de Méziriac (1581-1638), was a man of wide erudition, a friend of Peiresc, and one of the original 'Immortals'. He based his text on a manuscript in Paris (Parisinus Gr. 2379), and used (and improved) Xylander's translation. He indicates what he has supplied or conjectured in the Greek text by the use of brackets.
This edition was shared by Cramoisy and Drouart, and either name appears in the imprint. Newton owned a copy of this edition (Harrison 524), and Fermat's annotations in his copy were published by his son in 1670.
