Catalogue Note
La Célestine, a cruel and tragicomic tale of matchmaking reflecting the court life of the Catholic kings of Spain, was originally published in 1499. Picasso, who became more interested in the Old Masters towards the end of his life (as well as voyeuristic and erotic images), had worked with the printmakers the Crommelynck brothers since 1953.
This is one of the last four books to be illustrated by Picasso (most of the plates are dated 1968).
