  • Autograph manuscript of the play "Jeanne de Piennes"
apparently complete, the prose drama in five acts, with autograph title, cast list and stage directions, written in violet ink, the fair copy, but with many subsequent deletions and alterations throughout, including an extensive cut in Act 2, some revisions in black ink and pencil, 



Act 1 ("Jardin d'Ecouen": 35 pages, on a 20-leaf quarto gathering, including title and cast list, plus 2 final blanks
Act 2 ("Le Palais du Connétable à Paris"): 31 pages, on an 18-leaf gathering (2 stubs)
Act 3 ("Salle du Louvre"): 45 pages, on a 24-leaf gathering, stitched 
Act 4 ("A Rome. Salle d'un palais Romani"; Scène II: "A Paris"): 36 pages, the 2 scenes written and bound on separate gatherings (10 leaves and 5 leaves), secured with pins and by the act-title wrapper
Act 5: ("Dans le campagne autour de Piennes"; Scène II: "Salle de fête au palais de Villers-Cotterets"), 29 pages, 2 scenes written on separate gatherings (6 and 8 leaves), secured with pins and by the act-title wrapper



in 5 volumes, 176 pages in all, 4to (c. 23.5 x 18cm.), including titles, each act or scene secured by a pin or stitching, autograph-inscribed wrappers, ownership inscription on title ("Sofia Guerrieri-Gonzaga, Roma 1902"), no date [c.1902?], a few small rust stains, a few pages working loose

Catalogue Note

unpublished. This play was produced by French Television in 1969; there is is a manuscript for the production in the Bibliothèque nationale, but no published edition. The scene is set in Ecouen, Paris, Rome, Piennes and Villers-Cotterets in 1556 and 1557.  The protagonists are the young François de Montmorency and Jeanne de Piennes, together with King Henri II, Anne de Montmorency (mother of François), Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine, and others.
