Catalogue Note

"The body of the Palazzo Reale at Caserta, north of Naples, was built between 1752 and 1772, largely to designs by Vanvitelli... The present collection of plates was based on Vanvitelli's drawings, as a record of his commission at a time when the building work was still far from complete. The original designs were altered somewhat in the course of construction. The Palace was not habitable until 1775, and the interior decoration was not complete until the early nineteenth century" (BAL RIBA).
