Catalogue Note

first edition. Enríquez Gómez (1600-1663), of Portuguese-Jewish origin, was forced to flee Spain because of religious persecution and while exiled in France became secretary to Louis XIII. He wrote 22 plays and various works of poetry and prose, many of which attacked the Inquisition. His effigy was burned in 1660 and he died in jail after his arrest by the Inquisition.

The paper repairs with replacement manuscript are both used to describe this as the "primera parte" of La torre di Babilonia. However, no more was published, perhaps because of his return to Spain in the year the first part was published.
