Catalogue Note
Yakovlev (1887-1938) was a professor of art history in St Petersburg and one of the most important Russian artists of the Revolutionary period, associated with the Acmeist literary movement. He moved to Paris in 1920 where he gained a reputation as an ethnographical artist because of the vivid drawings he made on these expeditions to Africa and Asia.
