Catalogue Note
The Chinese inscription may be translated as follows:
The Sweet Olive falling as all human noises died out,
Silent night hugs solitary mountains stretching about,
The moon woke up but startled the birds sleeping here,
So their twitter echoes between spring gully and mere.
- In ravine birds chirping Wang Wei
The actual rock that inspired this work is to be offered for sale by Sotheby's as part of the sale: Tao: The Jiansongge Collection (Lot 2723). Named Pinnacle of Verdant Clouds, it is a 'Ying' limestone rock dating to the Ming / Qing dynasties.
