Condition
This work is in good condition overall. There are scattered abrasions and areas of paint loss visible throughout the surface which are inherent to the industrial nature of the materials and the artist's working method. The surface is slightly soiled and there are handling marks and scattered accretions visible throughout including a 1 in. liquid accretion located 3 in. from the edge of the taupe section. There are wax accretions along the rear side of the work which are presumably consistent with the artist's working method. There is a 2 in. by 1 ¾ in. adhesive accretion which is presumably the remnant of a label or adhesive material located approximately 10 in. from the edge of the white element. There is some evidence of loss to the honey-combed metal material, but the collaged elements otherwise appear stable.

Catalogue Note
"Stella conceived of his abstract 'figures' above all as a means of creating and articulating a viable new space, one that could compensate non-figurative painting for the space choked out of it by medium-oriented painters in the decades following Abstract Expressionism." -William Rubin (Exh. Cat., New York, The Museum of Modern Art, Frank Stella: 1970- 1987, 1987, p. 73)
