Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly softer in the original, with the blacks tending more to chocolate brown, the yellow stripes in the upper left quadrant more to sunflower yellow and the brown line across the central horizontal axis of the composition a more muted hue. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is some light wear and dirt along the four extreme overturn edges and corner tips. Some minute dust fibres have adhered to the work's surface in scattered places. There are a number of irregularities to the painted surface, all inherent to the artist's chosen medium and technique. There is a very fine vertical scratch running approximately 10cm. left of the vertical axis in the bottom left quadrant. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultraviolet light.

Catalogue Note

" I like making relations between the elements in the paintings you wouldn't expect. Like painting the left of the painting with expensive colours and the right of the painting with cheap colours. They will always be related to the other works though, because in the others it is the same situation: I start with something and then I move and push it from one side to the other." (Albert Oehlen quoted in: Exhibition Catalogue, London, Whitechapel Gallery, I Will Always Champion Good Painting, 2006, inside back cover)
