Catalogue Note

In 1995 the ICA presented Superstition, the first exhibition in Britain
by the Belgian painter Luc Tuymans. For this show – which was also
seen in Chicago, New York, Toronto and Frankfurt–Tuymans
created a body of work that expressed the anxieties and alienation of
contemporary life in Europe, built upon the suppressed memories of
a shocking and brutal past.

Tuymans has generously created a new painting, Donation, 2008,
especially for the ICA's 60th anniversary auction. The work features a
close-up of a face, focusing on the eyes, and the viewer is tempted to
read it as a portrait, although its source is in fact from film footage of
life-sized wax dolls.
