Catalogue Note

The ICA first exhibited the work of German artist Thomas Struth in
its ground-breaking photographic group exhibition Another
Objectivity
, 1988. Six years on the ICA presented the artist's first oneperson exhibition in the UK, Strangers and Friends. Struth's work also featured in The Institute of Cultural Anxiety, at the ICA in 1994-95.

Struth has generously donated the work Dan Ning River, Wuxi/China, 1997, which featured in the artist's retrospective Thomas Struth 1977-2002, which travelled to several American cities in 2003-04. This photograph is one of a group of works from 1997 depicting the waterways of China, a series which also includes: Boats at Wushan, Yangtse; Gorge, Wushan; and White Emperor at Wushan.
