Condition

Colour: The colours are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration. The illustration fails to accurately convey the three dimensionality of the sculpture. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is a minor indentation to the rear of the base approximately 15cm. from the left hand corner. A section of the drill hole is exposed to the left hand side of the front of the work where the base and the work itself adjoin.

Catalogue Note

The ICA presented the exhibition Alex Katz: Recent Paintings by the
American painter in 1990, featuring a group of the artist's panoramic
canvases. Katz also donated a work to the ICA's auction in 1997.

For the ICA's 60th anniversary auction Katz has selected an artist's
proof of the work Cow, 2007, a silkscreen on a freestanding
aluminium panel. Katz has painted cows since the 1950s, when he
began spending summers in Maine. In the early 1980s the artist
produced a large oil painting of cows against a bright green field,
and the latter image – and the cut-outs he made at this time – are the source for the current piece.

"When I exhibited my night paintings at the ICA, I received a large bad review. I assumed that the critic was out of touch. I asked Irving Sandler about him, he said: "Rothko's bad review was
longer than yours!"
