Catalogue Note
In 1983 the ICA presented a major exhibition by the American artist
Barbara Kruger, We Won't Play Nature to Your Culture: Works by Barbara Kruger. Following this, the artist featured in the ICA group
exhibitions Difference: On Sexuality and Representation, 1985, and
EXTRA ART: A Survey of Artists' Ephemera from 1960-1999, 2002-03.
For the ICA's 60th anniversary auction Barbara Kruger has donated a
new work created especially for the occasion. The image features one of the artist's trademark slogans, set against a found photograph of a blindfolded woman. The text "BELIEF + DOUBT = SANITY" involves the viewer in Kruger's characteristic exploration of individual power and social control.
"The ICA is a vital cultural site: a place where images, arrangements,
ideas and ambitions meet. It's as dense and challenging as the city that surrounds it." (Barbara Kruger, 2008)
