Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly warmer with the white tending more to ivory in the original. The catalogue illustration fails to fully convey the three dimenionality of the slash apparent in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There are a few fine isolated hairline tension cracks to the extreme overturn edges. Upon very close inspection there is an extremely fine tiny crack to the top of the vertical slit and a minute crack to the upper left corner. A tiny speck of green pigment is visble on close inspection towards the top of the right extreme edge, original to the work's execution. Under ultraviolet light there is a tiny spot of inpainting to each of the extreme corner tips and two fine lines of inpainting in the upper left quadrant.

Catalogue Note

"The slash was not the destruction of the painting... it was a dimension beyond the painting, the freedom to conceive art through any means, through any form." (The artist in: Exhibition Catalogue, Rome, Palazzo dello Esposzioni, Lucio Fontana, 1998, p. 246)
