Catalogue Note
The princess kneels on a richly decorated carpet, wearing a jacket with similar decoration reminiscent of Persian manuscript illumination of the late sixteenth century. The subject of this painting was a well established theme in Safavid painting of this period.
A similar composition is in the Art and History Trust Collection (Soudavar 1992, no. 92, 237-38). An earlier prototype is in the Arthur Sackler Museum (Welch 1979, no. 70, p.184).
