  • A Byzantine Mosaic Fragment, Syria
  • 42 1/2 by 56 3/4 in. 108 by 144 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a leaping winged horse with the neck and head of an ostrich(?), rows and columns of flowers in the field.

Provenance

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut

Condition

Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, red tesserae more worn than others, note non-structural crack to right of head, excess grout and old yellowish varnish or wax over most of surface, colors are less vivid in person than in the catalogue illustration.
