  • A Byzantine Mosaic Fragment, Syria
  • 39 3/4 by 43 1/4 in. 101 by 110 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae a basin with dentiled rim surmounted by two confronted water-spouts each in the form of a fish, a large plant-like motif above.

Provenance

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut [inv. no. 251]

Condition

Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, excess grout covers parts of the tesserae in areas, surface lightly covered in waxy substance which has turned colors over time
