  • Two Byzantine Mosaic Fragments, Syria
  • 49 1/2 by 46 1/2 and 50 1/2 by 46 1/2 in. 125.7 by 118.1 and 128.3 by 118.1 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae two peacocks flanking a large vase with gadrooned body and voluted handles, two scrolling vine stalks emerging from the vessels.

Provenance

acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut

Condition

Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, note non-structural cracks and areas of restoration to ends of peacock tails, most tesserae covered in excess grout, old yellowish varnish/wax left over in several areas, colors are less vivid in person than in catalogue illustrations.
