- A Byzantine Mosaic Panel, Syria
- 54 3/8 by 56 3/4 in. 138 by 144 cm.
depicting in multicolored tesserae within a border of triangles twin scrolling vines emerging from a large vase with ogee foot, gadrooned body, and voluted handles, a hare, a fish, and three birds among the foliage.
Provenance
acquired in 1969 by the present owner from Asfar Bros., Hotel St. George, Beirut
Condition
Tesserae set in heavy modern concrete slab, a few isolated tesserae missing, excess grout covers parts of the tesserae in areas, blue-green tesserae forming vine stalks have weathered more than those in the white background, surface covered in waxy substance which has turned colors over time
