Catalogue Note
Related veiled portraits are in the Foligno Archaeological Museum (R. Horn, Archäologischer Anzeiger, 1938, pp. 652f., fig. 12f.; H.R. Goette, Studien zur römischen Togadarstellungen, Mainz am Rhein, 1989, p. 121, no. B a 157, pl. 8.4.) and in the British Museum (I. Romeo, Ingenuus Leo [Xenia Antiqua Monographia, vol. 6], Rome, 1998, figs. 143-146, identified as Agrippa).
The entry which most closely matches the present sculpture in the wartime German inventories of the Palais Lanckorónski reads: "Bartloser Velatus, einer der Caesaren. Marmor. Lebensgross. Antik?" The head was inventoried under number "A.L. 825" in 1939 and under number "1060" in 1942. After the palace was emptied out of its contents the portrait was most probably kept in Vienna during the war; it was returned to Antoni Lanckorónski on July 2nd, 1947.
