Description

  • A Marble Head of Serapis Ammon
  • Height 13 1/4 in. 33.6 cm.
based on a Hellenistic prototype of the 2nd Century B.C., turned slightly to his right, with full centrally-divided beard of overlapping corkscrew curls, parted lips with teeth indicated, and wide-set eyes with incised irises and indented crescentic pupils, his wavy hair parted in the center, swept up above the forehead, and cascading down the sides in wavy voluted locks, two holes on either side of the forehead for attachment of the ram's horns, a hole on top of the head for insertion of the modius, the back of the head schematically carved.

Georges and Ludmilla Anghelopoulo, Beirut, Paris, and Kitzbühel, acquired from Elie Boustros, Beirut, prior to 1948

Condition

good, top of hair broken off, note various chips to beard, proper right pupil, and proper right side of neck, as well as abrasions to nose and eyebrows, face appears to have retained most of its original polish
