Catalogue Note

Chimborazo was believed to be the highest mountain in the world during the nineteenth century, dominating the landscape at 20,577 feet, and Frederic Edwin Church's Heart of the Andes (1859, Metropolitan Museum of Art) endeared the site to artists and patrons alike. Though numerous paintings by Loemans survive today, Chimborazo, Queen of the Andes is the only known tropical landscape. Many of his images are based on the works of more famous artists, suggesting that his version of Chimborazo was likely commissioned by an admirer of Church's painting.
