pahoa, made from a single piece of wood, each part offering a form perfectly dedicated to its particular use –the handle shaped to fit the palm and the fingers, the shaft slightly bent to deliver a horizontal blow, the concave face of the curved blade directed upwards.
The formal power, exploiting the tension between curves and angular planes, is accentuated by the roughly hewn surface. Retains traces of two old labels, upon one of which one can see 'L-14003...' Fine glossy reddish-brown patina.

Cette forme de poignard est extrêmement rare. Parmi la très riche collection d'armes hawaiiennes conservées au Bishop Museum d'Honolulu, seules trois relèvent du même type (reproduites dans Buck, 1957 : 433). Selon Buck (idem), leur forme diffère tant des autres poignards de l'archipel d'Hawaii qu'ils peuvent être considérés comme un type local, dont la réalisation était probablement restreinte à un district d'une seule île.
Gerritt P. Judd (1803-1873) est une figure historique d'Hawaii. Membre de la « Third Company of American Missionaries » arrivé à Hawaii en 1928, il exerça son métier de médecin et de physicien, tant auprès des communautés étrangères que des Hawaiiens. Secrétaire d'Etat aux Affaires étrangères, il fut le conseiller du roi Kamehameha III et joua un rôle clé dans la résistance contre la tentative avortée de l'Angleterre, en 1843, de coloniser le Royaume.
This form of dagger is extremely rare. Amongst the rich collection of Hawaiian weapons in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, there are only three examples of this shape (reproduced in Buck, 1957: 433). According to Buck (ibid.), their form differs so greatly from that of other Hawaiian daggers that one can consider them to be of a particularly local form, probably made only in a single district of one of the islands.

Secretary of State for foreign affairs, he was advisor to King Kamehameha III, and played a key role in the resistance against the failed English attempt to colonize the Kingdom in 1843.
