Catalogue Note
The art of the Zimba, a small people in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is influenced by two very different cultural complexes: on the one hand, the Lega and Bembe groups in the nearby forests, on the other hand, the Luba and related groups from the savanna. Small masks like the one from the Bohlen Collection are exceptionally rare and seem to be related to masks used by the bwami association of the Lega. For further discussion see Biebuyck (vol. II, 1986: 235-238) and Felix (1987: 206).
