Description

  • Length: 45 cm
carved in softwood of elongated ovoid form and plano-convex section, the front decorated with fluted designs overlaid with traces of red, white and black earth pigments, evidence of battle scarring, the slightly concave reverse similarly decorated and a deep-cut lug handle

Condition

There are three areas of nail-headed club damage to the front of the shield just above the black shape on the boss. There is a fine hairline crack in the upper central edge approximately 6 cm long and four small holes in the reverse probably created for use in display.
