Catalogue Note

Norham Castle was built by Bishop Ranulph Flambard in 1121 to protect his lands from 'robbers and Scots'.  Situated on the south bank of the River Tweed on the Scottish border it was a position of vital tactical importance and was fought over and besieged on numerous occasions between 1136 and 1531.

In the nineteenth century its romantic situation, perched high up above the river, together with its history, made Norham a popular subject for artists; most notably J.M.W. Turner who painted it on a number of occasions.

This picture and the following watercolours and prints (lots 30-40) were originally owned by Admiral Lord Charles Scott, Sir David Scott's father. As Naval Commander-in-Chief, Lord Charles lived with his family in the 1880s at Admiralty House in Sydney, Australia and his interest in marine combat is particularly demonstrated in this collection of drawings by Schetky.
