Catalogue Note

John Ward studied at the Royal College of Art between 1936 and 1939. He worked for Vogue magazine and taught part time at Wimbledon School of Art. Ward was elected to the Royal Academy in 1956 and appointed C.B.E. in 1985. His great reputation as a portrait painter led to prominent commissions, including those from the Royal Family.

John Ward and his wife Alison became friends with Sir David and Lady Scott after he drew a portrait of Sir David in 1982 (not included in this sale). The present portrait was drawn by Ward in the sitting room at the Dower House, and includes the last portrait of Lady Scott's beloved pug dog Sophie Saffron who died seventeen days later.
