Catalogue Note

Eliot Hodgkin and his wife visited David and Valerie Scott at Boughton in July 1973 and sent this drawing, along with a thank you note to the Scotts shortly afterwards. Hodgkin had originally owned William Somerville Shanks' painting Tiddley Winks which is offered in this sale (lot 153). It was on this visit to Boughton that Hodgkin expressed his regret in selling the Shanks painting. Hodgkin shared with the Scotts a love of flowers and gardening. A delightful photograph of Hodgkin with his wife Minie and Sir David Scott was taken by Valerie Scott in the garden at the Dower House during their visit (Fig 1).
