Catalogue Note
This drawing captures the quiet seclusion of the water meadows that fringe the buildings of colleges that lie near the Cherwell and the Isis. The gentlemen meander along the lane in peaceful dialogue, a peace only occasionally disturbed by undergraduates swarming across the meadows to the river to support college crews, or to catch a sight of Zuleika Dobson. She may have been first thought of in the very rooms that appear above the high retaining wall, where her creator Max Beerbohm originally studied. Bone knew the city well, producing drawings and etchings which evince this particular quality. It was to Oxford he came in late life; dying there in October 1953.
