Catalogue Note
Charles Green began his career as an apprentice illustrator to Josiah Wood Whymper. He later worked for the periodical Once a Week, but also submitted illustrations to London Society and Cassell's Magazine. He designed many engraved plates for the Dalziel Brothers, notably for their Household Edition of Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop. On many occasions Green worked up subjects that he had treated as black and white illustrations as watercolour subjects in their own right. He was elected a member of the Institute of Painters in Water-Colours in 1868.
In this work a group of people walking along the pavement have encountered a perplexed young girl. There is some humour in her quiet thoughtfulness and her very elegant clothes contrasting with the anxiety of the less affluent people that are keen to help her.
