Condition

The catalogue illustration is quite representative for the actual painting, although the actual painting is a little bit less yellow in tone. The canvas has a stable relining. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. Particularly the highlights of the lace have been wonderfully preserved. No damages seem to be apparent. A few small spots of retouching are visible in the background upper left, and in the sitter's cheeks and forehead. The paint surface is covered with a clear and fine layer of varnish and is under a dense craquelure pattern. Inspection under ultra violet light is largely impeded by the unevenly cleaned varnish layer, but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings. A few tiny retouchings are revealed in the crimson sash, and there is possibly some retouching in the blue coat. Offered in a decorative gilded wood frame in good condition. (MW)
