Description

- An Italianate wooded mountainous landscape with a figure resting in the foreground, other figures on a path near a river, a view of a ruined castle beyond
- oil on canvas
- 74.2 by 99.1 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a firm relining. The paint surface seems to be in good condition. A retouched paint loss is visible in along the upper left edge and in the foliage lower centre. The paint surface is covered with a thick and glossy layer of varnish, and has a very fine craquelure pattern. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals a few additional small retouchings along the lower edge, in the lower and upper right corners, and a few very tiny ones in the sky.
Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with moulded fillets. (MW)
