Description

  • Jan Frans van Bloemen, called l'Orizzonte
  • An Arcadian landscape with classical figures resting in the foreground, other figures on a path, a view of a village beyond
  • oil on canvas

  • 41.5 by 53.4 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is a lot darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a firm relining. Stretcher marks are visible along the left and lower edges. The paint surface is slightly abraded in places, mainly in the greens in the background, in the sky upper right. A small retouched paint loss is visible in the lower centre, and in the house in the background. The paint surface is under a very fine and dense craquelure pattern and covered with a slightly dirty and thick layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals a few tiny retouchings along the upper and left edges, in the mountain in the centre background, and on the rock in the foreground. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame with a few paint losses. (MW)
