Catalogue Note

Working in the redwood forests of Mendocino, Ayers created a small body of sculptural work spanning approximately 15 years.  After working as physicist for the NASA space program, Ayers retired to pursue his art full-time.  Much like the work of his California design contemporaries, wood selection and a distinct execution of carving dominated his designs.  Ayers was known to acquire his rare hardwoods from fellow designer Bob Stocksdale.  Pressured by his gallerist to create commercially acceptable pieces, this work represents Ayers preferred stylistic direction and is one the final works completed before his death.
