Description

  • Jules Leleu
  • Bed
  • gilt bronze mounted sycamore and upholstery

Provenance

Calderwood Galleries, Philadelphia, PA, 1992

Literature

Viviane Jutheau, Jules et AndrĂ© Leleu, Paris, 1989, p. 109 (for a related bureau plat with a similar undulating apron mount)

Condition

Generally very good overall condition. Some general rubbing, light nicks and scratches to the veneers as expected with age and use. The upholstery is later as expected and some of the piping is coming loose. The bed was cleverly lengthened by six inches with the addition of wood to the side rails which have been veneered to match. The veneer addition is apparent to the side of the rails, but the top of the rails are seamless which would indicate that the veneer was replaced entirely. There are some areas of veneer loss to the bed posts and small areas of veneer splicing. The threaded pins that hold the bed together are lacking and as such need to be replaced. The bronze elements have been re-gilt.
