Catalogue Note
The maiden flight of the McDonnell Douglas (presently Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet occurred on 18 November 1978. Although the jets are currently used in the service of at least seven foreign nations, the original F/A-18's were designed for use by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines. Accordingly the first jets were painted blue-on-white and were marked "Navy" on the left and "Marines" on the right. The twin engine, mid-wing aircraft is primarily used for reconnaissance, fighter escort, fleet air defense and supression of enemy air defenses. Designed specifically for maneuverability, the F/A-18 has been the choice demonstration aircraft flown by the Blue Angels since 1986.
