Catalogue Note
In a letter to A. Howell from St Jeannet on 4th February 1930, Frances Hodgkins wrote, 'Now I have moved from Le Pastoral to St Jeannet... I have quite a volume of pencil sketches but watercolours have eluded me.' Hodgkins returned to England in the summer of 1930, so it is likely the present work dates from the Spring of 1930. (Frances Hodgkins, 1869-1947, exh. cat., Whitford and Hughes, London, 1990)
