Provenance

The Mayor Gallery, London

Condition

The work is executed on wove paper. There are two sections of the sheet that have been torn away to the lower edge, and to the upper right corner. The sheet has been variously creased and torn throughout; the most substantial of the tears runs horizontally from the right edge (approximately 29cm in length), and the other vertically from the upper edge (approximately 20cm in length). There are artist's pinholes in all four corners, and towards the upper edge, although these were probably made during the creation of the work. The paint surface is slightly dirty. The peice is presented in a wooden frame and held between two sheets of glass so that both sides of the work can be viewed.

Catalogue Note

This work is the original design for the carpet that was displayed in the 'Music Room' by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell at the Lefevre Gallery in December 1932. The design in an abbreviated form was worked in wool cross-stitch as a cushion cover , by Ethel Grant; this is in the Garden Room at Charleston House.
