Selon une ancienne étiquette au dos, ce tableau aurait fait partie  des collections du Prince Louis Napoléon.

Elève de David, c'est au Salon de 1827 que la réputation de Claude-Marie Dubufe s'affirma avec deux grandes toiles: les regrets et les souvenirs. Le succès fut tel que les commandes lui vinrent en grand nombre de l'aristocratie. Le peintre se fit alors une spécialité des têtes d'expression féminines charmantes et sentimentales, à la manière de Greuze. Ces portraits de femmes aux postures sensuelles et volontairement théâtrales plaisaient beaucoup au public des années 1830-1840.
