Catalogue Note
Colin, élève de Girodet, grand ami de Delacroix et de Bonington participa aux Salons parisiens de 1819 jusqu'à la fin de sa vie, obtenant une médaille de première classe en 1840. En 1851 il fut chargé de la décoration d'une chapelle de l'église Saint Roch à Paris. A l'époque romantique, ses sujets, sa facture et sa technique étaient très proches de celles de Delacroix; comme lui, il s'inspirait des textes de Shakespeare, Lord Byron etc...et il peignit plusieurs scènes de la lutte pour l'indépendance grecque.
Plus tard, il fut surtout un grand portraitiste, représentant des personnes de la haute bourgeoisie, et aussi des acteurs, le plus souvent dans les costumes de leurs rôles.
