Description

  • settee height 38 1/2 in.; width 5 ft. 3 1/2 in.; depth 20 in.
  • 98 cm; 161.5 cm; 51 cm
comprising two settees and four chairs, decorated with painted arabesque scrolls and faux drapery. 

Condition

Overall in good condition. Re-upholstered. All pieces with extensive losses to gilded and decorated gesso mostly to top of backrests and all with the usual nicks and chips consistent with age and use. Further losses to gessoed decoration around the feet, now showing the fruitwood carved frame. One chair with a break to the right back leg that could be easily restored. All backrests of chairs with movement that will need to be professionally strengthened. Although not evident to the naked eye and difficult to record, considering the age of the salon suite there may have been areas redecorated over time.

The Moorish and Ottoman influence on architecture and the decorative arts that occurred in Europe, especially to the decorative schemes of Venetian furniture, is evident in the warm parcel-gilt polychromy applied to the faux-drapery of this elegant sitting suite.
