The present model was created by Christofle following the discovery on October 17, 1868, in Hildesheim, Germany, of the Roman original dated circa 1st Century AD and attributed to Benvenuto Cellini, now in the permanent collection of the Berlin Museum (Pergamon).

Compare with the same model on its pendant tripod pedestal designed for Christofle by Charles Rossigneux (1816-1909), which sold Sotheby's, Paris, October 17, 2007, lot 28.
