Condition
Overall in good condition with tarnishing to gilt-bronze in places. One arrow head mount loose. Pendulum, no key or bell. Minor chips to marble base and some gilt-bronze feet will need to be tightened.

Catalogue Note
Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807), was born in Switzerland and settled in Paris in 1745. Considered the best clockmaker of his time, he gained a great reputation for the excellence and accuracy of his chronometers. He was succeeded in business by his nephew, Louis Berthoud (1759-1813).
Etienne Maxant was located at 4 Rue Saintonge, Paris between 1880 and 1905 and is known to have supplied movements to many of the best cabinet and clock makers of the time.
